7th Annual Bocas Chili Challenge

TO BEAN OR NOT TO BEAN!……that is the question. This question has been asked for seven years at the Annual Bocas Chili Challenge. It’s been a mixed bowl! There is always a bragging right on who has the best chili. Texas Chili traditionally has no beans, because according to legend Texas cowboys always ate beans while driving cattle and when the drive was over, the last thing they wanted to eat was of course, more beans….so some enterprising street corner “chili queens” in San Antonio made chili with beef but no beans. It’s been an everlasting cowboy hit! More northern “chili heads” prefer the comfort of the bean!
The 7th Annual Chili Challenge will be held Sunday, September 9th, at the “Caribeano Beach Bar” on Isla Colon. Last year 14 chili teams & over 250 “chili heads” showed up to taste a multitude of concoctions from Hellfire & Brimstone, to chocolate flavored chili. The purchase of a $3 chili cup awards you with a tasting of all entries and a voting form. All teams are required to cook chili on- site and start at 9 am with tastings beginning at 2 pm. T-shirts and coozies will be available for purchase. Trophies are awarded to the top 3 teams.
So for a great day at the beach, come taste Bocas’ culinary geniuses idea of Panama’s best chili. The Bocas Chili Challenge committee sends out a special invite to chili challengers from all over Panama….Come on down to paradise! For more info, contact John 6486- 5553 or JB 6583-0037
