Pargo Point Project

San Cristobal fishing village Valle Escondido is in an overfished area and therefore has not provided sustenance to the village for some time. In an effort to recreate a sustainable fish population in the waters near the Valle Escondido community, Coral Restoration Panama, in partnership with Floating Doctors Medical Center, hosted a hands-on educational event in February of 2019. Twenty-one students from the community took part in the design and assembly of over twenty artificial reef structures to be placed in the sea at the end of a small reef area they named Pargo Point. These “fish castles” will become 

habitat for breeding fish and bases where coral can be transplanted at a later date. In April, the group of students reconvened at Pargo Point to see fruits of their labor. The group snorkeled in the area and saw their structures stacked together to create an artificial reef. They will be able to watch how the area changes over time as a result of their hard work. The entire project was funded by the generosity of concerned citizens and made possible by the energy of young people eager to help create a future with hope for all.

La pueblo de pesca Valle Escondido de San Cristóbal está en una área de sobrepesca y por ende no le ha proveído sustento al pueblo por un tiempo. En un esfuerzo por volver a recrear un población sostenible de peces en las aguas cerca de la comunidad de Valle Escondido, el Coral Restoration Panamá, en asociación con el Floating Doctors Medical Center, fueron anfitriones de un evento educacional en Febrero del 2019. 21 estudiantes de la comunidad fueron parte del diseño y la elaboración de más de veinte estructuras de arrecife artificial para después ser colocados en el mar al final de una pequeña área de arrecife llamado Pargo Point. Estos “castillos para peces” se convertirán en él habita para criar peces y la base en donde se podrán trasplantar el coral en una fecha futura. En abril, el grupo de estudiantes se reunió nuevamente en Pargo Point

para ver los frutos de su trabajo. El grupo hizo snorkel en el área y vieron como su estructuras habían sido apiladas para crear un arrecife artificial. Ello van a poder ver los cambias el área al pasar del tiempo como resultado de su arduo trabajo. El proyecto entero fue fundado por la generosidad de los ciudadanos preocupados y fue posible por la energía de los jóvenes con ganas de crear un futuro que le de esperanzas a todos.
