What is it like to operate small independent media in the era of fake news? Nico will present the challenges and opportunities of sustaining a dedicated free community information resource.

He will discuss Breeze Card, the membership club of The Bocas Breeze that has been implemented to help keep our community newspaper vibrant and informative. Soon to launch a digital visitor pass version of the Breeze Card, we invite you to become the first to learn about how this program will work and how Rotary and the community can support this movement.

May 23 – *PANAMA CITY* BOCATOREÑO CACAO AND CHOCOLATE: History and Tradition, presented by the French Cultural Alliance (Alianza Francesa), The Darklands Foundation and the Bocas Showcolate Fair, created by Mathilde Grand

With over two decades of work on indigenous issues in Latin America, from Honduras to Peru, Mathilde is the founder of The Darklands Foundation and Citizens Of Chocolate, a collective of indigenous women that has been producing cacao and chocolate in the Panamanian rainforest for 19 years. She specializes in integrated agriculture in the rainforest and the study of medicinal/edible plants.

We will have the keynote lecture by CARLOS ABREGO, Agronomist, National Coordinator of the Coffee and Cacao Program of the Ministry of Agriculture (MIDA), educator, agricultural extensionist with vast experience in rural development and sustainable agriculture.

June 1 – Día de la Literatura en la provincia de Bocas del Toro, (Bocas del Toro Literature Day) in honor of esteemed Bocas del Toro native writers Guillermo Sánchez Borbón and his brother José María Sánchez Borbón. June 1 is the birthday of Guillermo Sánchez Borbón (pen name Tristán Solarte)

June 1-30 – Tiki Bar Eckl’s at Hotel Bocas Town closes for vacation. 

June 8 Rock ‘n’ Relief, in solidarity with Bocas del Toro fire victims. Live bands, DJs, raffles and artisan market, all in benefit of the businesses and employees affected by the April 13 fires.

June (exact date to be announced) – The Darklands Foundation Silent Art Auction, 7th Edition – Donate art or bid on art in support of The Darklands Foundation Women’s Program, which addresses domestic violence, sexual abuse, reproductive health, women’s rights and women’s economics in the community. Contact The Darklands Foundation to donate a piece of art and stay tuned for more details coming soon about the exhibition, bidding and closing event. This event was rescheduled due to the April 13 fire damage.

July 1 – National holiday for the Presidential Inaguration. “Toma de posesión del nuevo presidente de Panamá 2024-2029.” Paid holiday for all employees and double-time and a half for those who work the day.
