Azul Paradise is Growing, Teaching and Giving with Hydroponic Gardens
Effective on November 29, 2022, Giving Tuesday, the sales from the first 200 plates enjoyed at the Azul Restaurant will directly fund a hydroponic garden set for the science program at the local high school, El Colegio Josue Rogelio Ibarra on Isla Colon. Proceeds from the next 200 plates will benefit the same set for the school children of the Salt Creek community on Bastimentos Island.
WOW! Really, what is better than teaching the next generation about growing vitamin rich foods in their own homes and schools?
The new concept at Azul Paradise’s Bocas Town location is a fresh one; with herbs and vegetables growing in the restaurant! There are active hydroponic garden systems functioning right next to your table; working to grow the same herbs and vegetables used in the dishes and cocktails. “Trellis-to-table” anyone? How about: restaurant, to plate, to educating the community on how to grow their own food!
There is also a ocean element to the educational experience that is being supported by Azul Restaurant’s efforts: “We are proud to support Caribbean Coral Restoration by showcasing the ecosystem below our restaurant. You can view marine life while you dine with us,” they wrote on social media, as part of their campaign announcing their new concept to the world, “We are not just the food and pure ingredients, we are in support of all things local; people, places and community.”
The idea of food autonomy is about a community sustainably producing its own foods and being less dependent on commercial farming and shipping goods. This activity encourages a lot of positive outcomes: healthier diets, job opportunity, reduces carbon emissions and waste (less shipping), lowers the cost of living and not to mention, there are proven therapeutic and personal development benefits to home gardening. Talk about a win-win-win-win-win !!!
And the winning doesn’t stop there…
