Bastimentos Island is home to breathtakingly beautiful beaches and North Beach is one of them. It also has a small stamp of land known as Polo Beach named after it’s legendary resident, Mr. Polo. On February 27th, volunteers from The Red Frog Foundation spent the morning removing an estimated 2,000 pounds of trash from the entire North Beach area.
What began as Polo’s coconut husk pile grew over the years along with the rise of tourist visits to the beach. Trash was left in a concentrated area and the task of removing it became more daunting as time went on. Polo did not have the means to clear it himself. The Red Frog Foundation stepped in and organized the materials, volunteers and the logistical support necessary to get the job done. “The Red Frog Foundation
was inspired to do this project by the efforts the city has made recently. We wanted to follow in the footsteps of what Bocas del Toro has been doing already,” commented Steve Bolton of Red Frog Beach. Bolton is referring to the recent advances in waste management and city beautification in Bocas del Toro. The municipal government’s plastic prohibitions, volunteer beach and street clean up projects and public trash bin installations of Unidos por Bocas are just some of the projects happening.
After the successful February 27th clean up, North Beach will be maintained by the Foundation. Signage urging visitors to not leave trash will be posted in the area. Polo himself is now equipped with bags for visitors don’t have a plan to bring their trash back. Additionally, the Red Frog and Bastimentos Holdings security team will collect Polo’s trash regularly. This was an excellent community project by the Foundation at Red Frog and its volunteers.

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the Foundation for their continued support to Bocas’ elderly and disabled home, Casa Asilo. This March, they donated beautiful brand new furniture and a refrigerator which was very needed after the recent flood damage. The Foundation is also highly supportive of education on the islands. La isla Bastimentos es el hogar de playas tan hermosas que te dejan sin aliento. La Playa Norte es una de ellas. También tiene una pequeña parte de terreno conocida como Polo Beach que lleva el nombre de su legendario residente: El Sr. Polo. El 27 de febrero, los voluntarios de La Fundación Red Frog pasaron la mañana sacando un estimado de 2,000 libras de basura. ¡Esto de toda el área norte de la playa!
Lo que empezó como el lugar adonde Polo tiraba sus cáscaras de coco creció a través de los años al igual que el aumento de visitas a la playa de parte de turistas. La basura la dejaban en un área concentrada y la tarea de removerla toda de un viaje se volvía más abrumadora al pasar el tiempo. Polo no tenía los medios para limpiar lo el mismo. La Fundación Red Frog intercedió y organizó los materiales, los voluntarios y el apoyo logístico necesario para llevar a cabo el trabajo. “La Fundación Red Frog fue inspirada a hacer este proyecto por los esfuerzos que ha hecho la ciudad recientemente. Nosotros queríamos seguir los pasos de lo que estaba haciendo Bocas del Toro,” comentó Steve Bolton de la Playa Red Frog. Bolton se refiere a los siguientes avances en el tratamiento de los desechos y el embellecimiento de la ciudad en Bocas del Toro; específicamente, las prohibiciones de plástico del gobierno municipal, los proyectos de voluntariado de limpieza de playas y calles y la instalación de basureros públicos de parte de Unidos por Bocas.

Polo está ahora equipado con bolsas para los visitantes que no tiene planeado traer su basura de vuelta. Adicionalmente el equipo de seguridad Holdings de Bastimentos y Red Frog recolectarán la basura de Polo regularmente.

Este fue un excelente proyecto comunitario por la Fundación en Red Frog y sus voluntarios. Nos gustaría aprovechar esta oportunidad para reconocer la Fundación por su apoyo continuo a la casa de los ancianos y discapacitados de Bocas, Casa Asilo. En marzo de este año, ellos donaron hermosos nuevos muebles y una refrigeradora la cual era muy necesitada después de los daños de la reciente inundación.
