In Loving Memory of Keith Allan Gardiner ◈ February 21, 1991-October 10, 2019

On October 10, 2019, Keith Allan Gardiner, loving son, brother and devoted boyfriend, passed away suddenly in a boating accident while spearfishing off Bastimentos Island. He is survived by his parents and two older sisters, Derek, Laurie, Kristin and Kayleen Gardiner. 

Keith was born and raised in Canada and, after receiving a Business Management degree from Conestoga College in 2013, he spent some time in Thailand teaching English to schoolchildren. He then traveled to Mexico to train to be a yoga instructor while living in a tent on the beach. This training took him to Ecuador to then teach. After some time, Keith returned to Canada to care for his grandfather and, during the long Northern Ontario winter, he tapped into his love for music and taught himself to play the ukulele. 

Keith loved to travel the world in search of adventure and this wanderlust then brought him to  Nicaragua. where he met his loving partner, Heylis. Together they traveled to Panama where he discovered a love for spearfishing.

His love of nature and fishing always directed his travels to the water, which is where he spent much of his time. He also developed a love for nature photography. No matter where his travels took him, he always took in stray cats and dogs. While living in Bastimentos, he and Heylis had adopted a dog and cat (Nica and Cari). Keith was a charismatic motivator and leader with a free spirit and a true love for adventure. He made friends everywhere he went and the bonds he shared with his family and friends ran deep.

Keith’s love for Bastimentos was well-received and embraced by the community, where he spent the last year working at the Bastimentos resort, The Sea Monkey. “”Keith was a huge presence at the Sea Monkey. Everyone, from our staff to our guests to the community in Old Bank, will fondly remember and dearly miss Keith’s graciousness, kindness, and good nature. I count it as a blessing to have known him for the two years we worked together and will be forever grateful for his friendship,” says Stacy Harris.

Keith’s spirit was adventurous and fearless and his kind and loving heart will live on forever in the hearts and memories of all who knew him.

At Keith’s memorial in Bastimentos, friends and neighbors suggested some kind of annual event to commemorate Keith. Since Keith was such an avid fisherman, a fishing tournament seemed appropriate. The more everyone thought about it, the overall feeling was that the event could be more encompassing of the larger community for all those who have lost loved ones to the sea. En Memoria de Keith Allan Gardiner

El 10 de octubre del 2019, Keith Allan Gardiner, amado hijo, hermano y novio devoto, repentinamente falleció en un accidente de bote mientras hacía pesca con arpón en las afueras de la Isla Bastimentos. A él le sobreviven sus padres y dos hermanas mayores, Derek, Laurie, Kristin y Kayleen Gardiner.

 Keith nació y creció en Canadá y, después de recibir un título en Administración de Empresas de parte de Conestoga College en el 2013, estuvo un tiempo en Tailandia enseñando inglés a niños en las escuelas. Después viajó a México para entrenar y convertirse en instructor de yoga mientras vivía en una tienda de campaña en la playa. Este entrenamiento lo llevó a Ecuador para después ponerse a enseñar. Después de un tiempo, Keith regresó a Canadá para cuidar de su abuelo y, durante el largo invierno del Norte de Ontario, aprovechó su amor por la música y aprendió a tocar el ukulele.

Keith amaba viajar por el mundo en busca de aventuras y este espíritu viajero lo llevó a Nicaragua en donde conoció a su amorosa pareja, Heylis. Juntos viajaron a Panamá en donde descubrió su amor por la pesca con arpón. 

Su amor por la naturaleza y la pesca siempre dirigieron sus viajes al agua, en donde pasaba mucho de su tiempo. Él también desarrolló un amor por la fotografía de la naturaleza. Sin importar a donde lo llevaban sus viajes, siempre le daba un hogar a gatos y perros de la calle. Mientras vivió en Bastimentos, él y Heylis adoptaron a una perrita y un gatito (Nica y Cari). Keith era un motivador carismático y líder con un espíritu libre y un verdadero amor por la aventura. Él hacía amigos en todos los lugares que visitaba y los lazos que tenía con su familiares y amigos eran muy fuertes.

El amor que Keith le tenía a Bastimentos fue bien recibido y aceptado por la comunidad, en donde él pasó el último año trabajando en un centro turístico de Bastimentos, The Sea Monkey. “Keith era una gran presencia en el The Sea Monkey. Todos, desde nuestro equipo a nuestros huéspedes y la comunidad de Old Bank, lo recordarán con cariño y sinceramente extrañaran lo cortés, lo amable y lo bondadoso que él era. Yo lo veo como una bendición el haberlo conocido en los dos años que trabajamos juntos y estaré siempre agradecida por su amistad,” nos dice  Stacy Harris.

El espíritu de Keith era aventurero e intrépido y su corazón amable y amoroso vivirá para siempre en los corazones y las memorias de todos los que lo conocían.

En el homenaje de Keith en Bastimentos, amigos y vecinos sugirieron algún tipo de evento anual para conmemorar a Keith. Ya que Keith era un pescador tan ávido, un torneo de pesca parecía apropiado. Entre más lo pensaban, el sentimiento en general era de que el evento incluyera a una comunidad más grande para todos los que habían perdido a un ser amado en el mar. Quédese en sintonía para más información sobre un evento anual que promueve la concientización sobre la seguridad en el océano y al la vez el recordar a los que hemos perdido en el mar.
