Costa Rica Green Airways Officially Lands in Bocas del Toro!
It was a historic day for Bocas del Toro as two Green Airways aircraft touched down on the runway of the José E. Hall International Airport on Isla Colon for the Costa Rican airline’s inaugural voyage on the morning of August 23, 2022. The airline’s leadership team and distinguished guests were greeted on the tarmac by Panama’s minister of tourism, Ivan Eskildsen and Bocas del Toro ATP director, Lesbia Rubides, among others.
Costa Rica Green Airways is a family business founded by a father-son team who are both airline pilots bearing the same name: Everardo Carmona. They have been working together in the air travel business since 2009 and in 2019 founded a domestic airline “uniting their passion for flying safely, extraordinary service, and their love of nature,” as stated on the website. Well, Green Airways can now be considered an international airline, with three flights weekly to Bocas del Toro, Panama. Initially they will have Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday flights to be conservative – as explained by Everardo Carmona – with plans to expand to daily flights as soon as the market demands it.
“Green” Airways because of the company’s love of nature and its commitment to finding sustainable practices in an industry with a significant carbon footprint. According to their website, the airline aims to “maintain carbon neutrality in all our flights and operations” and that they “plant a seed of endemic trees (including the Guanacaste Tree) around the Bongo and Aria rivers in Costa Rica, for each passenger who flies with us.”
Costa Rica Green Airways starts operations immediately with three weekly trips between Bocas del Toro (Isla Colon) and San Jose: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, leaving 11am from San Jose (Costa Rica time) to Isla Colon and 2pm from Isla Colon (Panama Time) to San Jose. Six months out the year, including now in August, Costa Rica is one hour behind Panama. See current schedule and website for booking below.
It is a 45 minute straight shot flight. However, Captain Everardo Carmona explained that Green Airways will offer a 49 minute scenic journey for its passengers; leaving the jungle of Costa Rica from the Tobías Bolaños International Airport (SYQ) and arriving to the majestic view of the turquoise Caribbean waters dotted with islands, mangroves and coral reefs from above. Allowing a few extra moments of taking in the beauty of Bocas del Toro upon arriving is all part of an experience Green Airways would like to offer to the visitors of Costa Rica and Bocas del Toro.
This is great news for Bocas del Toro and its visitors, as many travelers love to combine trips to Costa Rica with a Bocas del Toro visit. As far as international flights from Europe, the US and beyond go, sometimes the pricing, availability and convenience of flying to Sane Jose, Costa Rica can be more ideal than traveling through Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. Therefore, this is important also for Bocas de Toro residents’ international travel needs as well as visitors whose first and final destination is Bocas del Toro.
