Some were saying “That’s not my job!” or “Don’t taxes pay for things like that?” while others were saying “Who cares, the park is for everyone!”  The park was looking pretty miserable before the volunteers of BELLO stepped in: trash on the ground, the trees poorly maintained with branches falling down all the time, and not to mention the condition of the paint. That’s when BELLO decided that its newest campaign would be to restore the park to something the people of Bocas del Toro could be proud of.

The ladies of BELLO raised the funds to buy all the painting supplies by raffling off 10 passion fruit pies at Cable Chico on September 24th and collecting donations from various parties. With the supplies bought, they set the dates of October 11th, 12th and 13th to get the job done.
The weekend was a great success as volunteers came and went; doing what they could to help beautify the park. In the end, the trees were trimmed, 33 benches were sanded, primed and re-painted, new plants were potted and the park was even adorned with a little artistic flair.

Professor Mario Garrido took the time to paint a wonderful mural on the base of the gazebo that’s in the park and Fulo Coqueño touched up one of the benches with a very appropriate message: “Yo Cuido Mi Parque” (I take care of my park). I think those words sum it all up quite nicely.
I take care of my park, he takes care of his park and so does BELLO and of all the lovely volunteers who got their hands dirty that weekend. A big thanks to all those who made this campaign a success!
