Los concursos de trenzas y atuendo se llevarán a cabo en línea del 24 al 27 de mayo

El patrimonio cultural de los afropanameños se celebra todo el mes de mayo, culminando en la fiesta oficial: el Día Nacional de la Etnia Negra, el 30 de mayo. Según un artículo de 2014 en La Estrella de Panamá, el 41% de la población de Panamá es de ascendencia africana. La diáspora africana en Panamá está especialmente representada en su lado caribeño, Colón, Portobelo y, por supuesto, Bocas del Toro.

Normalmente en Bocas del Toro, el mes de mayo está lleno de actividades sociales en Isla Colón y en el pueblo de Old Bank, Isla Bastimentos; todo en honor al mes de la etnia negra: desfiles, eventos gastronómicos, conciertos, bailes y presentaciones con bocatoreños luciendo coloridos atuendos tradicionales africanos y peinados especialmente trenzados.

El 19 de mayo de 2019, el municipio de Bocas del Toro junto con unas empresas locales de apoyo se asociaron para celebrar una feria gastronómica con un concurso de cocina llamado “My Grandmother is the Best Chef” (“Mi abuela es la mejor chef” en inglés). El evento se realizó en el rancho del Bar Caribeño, afuera en la Playa Itsmito (también conocida como “Las Cabañas”). El evento contó con degustaciones de platos nativos de la zona: patí, plantintá, brágada y muchos más. El evento principal fue un concurso de cocina de Ron Don; la tradicional sopa de pescado y leche de coco del Caribe. El 19 de mayo de 2020, realizaron concursos de trenzas y el mejor atuendo tradicional africano.

Este año, con la pandemia mundial COVID-19 y las medidas de cuarentena implementadas por el gobierno nacional panameño, será imposible realizar el mismo tipo de eventos culturales porque la reunión de grandes cantidades de personas representa un riesgo para la salud en este momento. Las reuniones sociales si  pueden posponerse, pero no habrá absolutamente ninguna cancelación del orgullo étnico y el honor del patrimonio cultural presente en la comunidad de Bocas del Toro. El grupo de voluntarios cívicos Isleños Unidos anunció el 20 de mayo que celebrarán concursos en línea en honor a las tradiciones del mes de la etnia negra.

Habrá tres concursos: (1) trenzas (2) vestimenta para niños y (3) vestimenta para adultos. La fecha límite para inscribirse es el 24 de mayo. Todas las entradas se hacen con fotos y videos y el público las votarán en línea a través de las plataformas de redes sociales de Isleños Unidos (Facebook e Instagram). Para el concurso de trenzas, un representante de Isleños Unidos hará una visita a cada concursante para confirmar al 100% que sus trenzas están auténticamente hechas en casa durante la cuarentena. Cada ganador recibirá una canasta de alimentos.

¡Qué iniciativa tan chevere, divertida, cultural y creativa! Estamos ansiosos por ver todas las entradas y votar por nuestros favoritos. La gente podrá votar el 25 y 26 de mayo y las fotos con más “like” serán declaradas ganadoras. El ganador recibe una canasta de comida.

Adaptar y posponer” es el sentimiento y las vibraciones son positivas, creativas y fuertes. Cuando termine la cuarentena y el Ministerio de Salud determine que las reuniones públicas son seguras nuevamente, Bocas del Toro debería celebrar un evento de la etnia negra, ya sea el mes de mayo, junio, julio, agosto o lo que sea. ¡La cultura está viva 365!

Isleños Unidos es un grupo cívico de voluntarios que se formó como respuesta a los desafíos presentados por la pandemia COVID-19. Además de los concursos del Mes de la Etnia Negra, han participado activamente en la fumigación del ferry y otras áreas clave, coordinándose con las autoridades con respecto a protocolos de higiene y planes de contingencia para determinar si el virus llega a las islas y entreteniendo a las familias con fiestas para los niños durante la cuarentena. La actividad principal del grupo es la recolección de suministros esenciales y la distribución a las familias más afectadas en el archipiélago. Las donaciones de alimentos básicos, productos higiénicos y medicinas son muy significativas para los muchos bocatoreños que están sin trabajo en este momento. The Isleños Unidos Group Celebrates Black Ethnicity Month with Virtual Contests!

Hair braiding and traditional African attire contests to be held on-line May 24 – May 27

The cultural heritage of Afro-Panamanians is celebrated the whole month of May, culminating on the official holiday Panama the National Day of the Black Ethnicity on May 30th.  According to a 2014 article in La Estrella de Panamá, 41% of Panama’s population is of African ancestry.  The African diaspora in Panama is especially represented on its Caribbean side, Colón, Portobelo and of course, Bocas del Toro.

Normally in Bocas del Toro the month of May is filled with social activities on Isla Colón and in the town of Old Bank, Bastimentos Island; all in honor of Black Ethnicity month: parades, gastronomic events, musical performances, dancing and presentations with Bocatoreños sporting colorful traditional African attire and specially braided hairstyles.  On May 19, 2019, the Bocas del Toro municipality and supporting local businesses partnered to have a gastronomic fair with a cooking contest called “My Grandmother is the Best Chef.”  The event was held at the rancho of the Bar Caribeño, outside on the beach at Playa Itsmito (also known as “Las Cabañas”).  The event featured tastings of dishes native to the area: patí, plantintá, brágada,and many more. The main event was a cooking contest of Ron Don; the traditional Caribbean coconut milk and fish soup.  On May 19, 2020, they held contests for the best braided hairstyle and the best traditional African attire.

This year with the global pandemic COVID-19 and quarantine measures implemented by the Panamanian National government, it will be impossible to hold the same kinds of cultural events because the gathering of large amounts of people represents a health risk at the moment.  While social gatherings can be postponed, there will be absolutely no cancellation of the ethnic pride and the honoring of the cultural heritage present in the community of Bocas del Toro.  Civic volunteer group Isleños Unidos announced on May 20 that they will be holding contests on-line in honor of the Black Ethnicity month traditions.

There will be three contests: (1) hair braiding (2) children’s attire and (3) adult’s attire. The deadline to enter is May 24.  All entries are made with photos and videos and will be voted for by viewers on-line via the social media platforms of Isleños Unidos (Facebook and Instagram). For the hair braiding contest, a representative of Isleños Unidos will pay a visit to each contestant to confirm 100% that their braids are authentically woven in house during the quarantine.  Each winner will each receive a basket of food.

What a cool, fun, cultural and creative initiative!  We are so looking forward to seeing all the entries and voting for our favorites.  Folks will be able to vote on May 25 and 26 and the photos with the most likes will be declared winners.  The winner receives a basket of food.

Adapt and postpone” is the sentiment and the vibes are positive, creative and resistant.  When the quarantine is over and when public gatherings are determined to be safe by the Ministry of Health again, Bocas del Toro should have a celebration of Black Ethnicity, whether it’s the month of May, June, July, August or whatever.  The culture is alive 365!

Isleños Unidos is a civic group of volunteers that formed as a response to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.  In addition to the Black Ethnicity Month contests, they have been active in fumigation of the ferry and other key areas, coordinating with authorities regarding hygienic protocols and contingency plans for if the virus arrives to the islands and entertaining families with children’s parties during the quarantine.  The group’s main activity is the collection of essential supplies and distributing to the most affected families in the archipelago.  Donations of basic foods, hygienic supplies and medicines are so meaningful to the many Bocatoreños that are out of work at the moment.  If you would like to support their effort, they have collection boxes in the following supermarkets: Supermercado Isla Colon, Super Gourmet, Calle 8, 3R Mall and Tony’s Market.  If you would like to donate cash, you can deposit in the following bank account and the funds will be used to buy supplies for local families out of work:
