Guillermo Sánchez Borbón Hospital A new protagonist in the writing of Bocas del Toro´s history

Wednesday, June 26, 2019, symbolized a combining of a rich cultural past with the dawn of an exciting new hospital to add to the rich history of Bocas del Toro. President Juan Carlos Varela cut the ribbon to inaugurate the new hospital Guillermo Sánchez Borbón of Isla Colon. The new hospital, replacing the current one, will not only have modern medical equipment, but an improved quality of public care and an increased amount of services than are currently offered.

Who Was Guillermo Sánchez Borbón?

Also known as Tristán Solarte, this Panamanian writer and reporter won much recognition in both Panama and abroad as one of the most distinguished men of writing in Panamanian realism. Most hospital centers are named after a person related to health, but now one of the most prominent figures in the Panamanian social world has been chosen to represent this new piece of architecture. In January 2019 he was awarded with the Orden de Manuel Amador Guerrero in the Gran Official rank. This is the highest honor of Panama and is awarded to recognize distinguished people in the sciences, arts, and politics. Sánchez Borbón died at 95 on February 24, 2019, and now our new hospital of Isla Colon has his great name. 

The New Hospital Construction

The construction of the  project is being executed by the group Construcciones Nova. The building is a “medium sized” center in terms of hospital building size classification – measured by the number of patient beds in the hospital. The new hospital Is equipped with:

• Waiting rooms
• Lab with the cutting edge technology health care equipment
• X-ray unit
• Intensive Care Units 
• One of the most important advances is that the oxygen supplied to the patients will be supplied by a central oxygen system. In other words, the oxygen tanks beside the bed will be eliminated and will work like a central air conditioning system.

One of the much needed updates is creating sleeping quarters for the doctors to sleep. Currently, if a doctor wants to work in the Isla Colon hospital, this individual needs to transfer his or her residency to the island. This is a reason as to why many doctors have chosen not to practice medicine in the Bocas del Toro province. And so the new hospital has both private and shared rooms in order to offer the personnel a housing option and mitigate the need of re-locating to Bocas. 

The total cost of the construction estimated at $22,500,000. This comes from bi-lateral cooperation between the government of Panama and the government of Taiwan. Taiwan donated $7,500,000 for the first phase as part of the agreement between both parts. 

The construction is not totally complete but it is already an important advance in the health of the archipelago. The section that is operational and open to the public is already bigger than the current hospital of the island.The location is in Big Creek, close to one of the most renowned hotels of the island. During the time that the transition is being made, the old hospital will still continue to offer medical assistance.

El Nuevo Protagonista en la Escritura de la Historia de Bocas del Toro

El miércoles 26 de junio simboliza una combinación de un rico pasado cultural con el amanecer de un nuevo hospital que se agrega a la rica y variada historia de Bocas del Toro. Presidente Juan Carlos Varela cortó el listón para inaugurar el nuevo hospital Guillermo Sánchez Borbón de Isla Colón. El ¨Hospital Guillermo Sánchez Borbón¨, viene a complementar al vigente hospital de Bocas del Toro. El nuevo hospital no solo tendrá equipamiento médico moderno, sino que también tendra una mejorar en la calidad de atención al público, al igual que un más servicios de los que se ofrecen actualmente. 

¿Quién Fue Guillermo Sánchez Borbón?

También conocido como Tristán Solarte, este escritor y periodista panameño ganó múltiples premios y reconocimientos tanto en Panamá como en el extranjero. El fue uno de los literatos más destacados en la escritura realista panameña. 

La mayoría de los centros hospitalarios son nombrados por una persona vinculada a la salud. Pero por sorpresa en este caso, Sánchez Borbón, una de las figuras más prominentes en el mundo social de Panamá, fue escogido para representar esta nueva pieza de arquitectura. Sánchez Borbón murió a los 95 años.el 24 de febrero del 2019. Esta es una manera regional de honrar y agradecer todo lo que él logró en esta hermosa tierra. 

La Construcción Del Nuevo Hospital

El proyecto está siendo ejecutado por el grupo Construcciones Nova. El edificio es un centro de “mediano tamaño” en cuanto a los tamaños de clasificación de edificios de hospitales – medido por el número de camas de pacientes en el hospital. El nuevo hospital tiene:

• Salas de espera
• Un laboratorio equipado con equipos de vanguardia tecnológica en el área de la salud
• Unidad de rayos X
• Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos
• Uno de los más importantes avances es que el oxígeno que se le suministrará a los pacientes será por un sistema de oxígeno centralizado.Es decir que se eliminan los tanques de oxígeno al lado de la cama y funciona como un aire acondicionado central.

Una de las actualizaciones que verdaderamente era una necesidad es que tendrá habitaciones para que los médicos puedan dormir. Actualmente, si un doctor desea trabajar en el hospital de Isla Colón, este individuo deben trasladar su residencia para la isla. Esta es la razón por la cual muchos doctores deciden no practicar la medicina en la provincia de Bocas del Toro. Es por ello que cuenta con habitaciones tanto privadas como compartidas para ofrecerle al personal una opción habitacional y mitigar la necesidad de venir a vivir a Bocas.

El costo total fue tasado en $22,500,000. En el marco del acuerdo de cooperación bilateral entre el gobierno de Panamá y el gobierno de Taiwán. Taiwán donó  $7,500,000 para la primera etapa como parte del acuerdo entre las partes.

 La obra no está completamente terminada pero es un avance importante en cuanto al sistema sanitario del archipiélago. Tan solo la parte que quedó abierta al público es más grande que todo el hospital actual de la isla. Está ubicado en Big Creek, cerca de uno de los hoteles de mayor renombre de la isla. Durante el tiempo que dure la transición, el viejo hospital aún continuará ofreciendo asistencia médica.
