The Music That Left Bocas Comes Home: Introducing the Luis Russell Jazz & Heritage Festival

This October, Bocas del Toro will celebrate a remarkable homecoming.
Many people know New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz. Far fewer know that one of the musicians who helped shape that sound was born right here in Bocas del Toro.
On October 16 and 17, 2026, the inaugural Luis Russell Jazz & Heritage Festival (LURU Jazz Fest) will invite the community and visitors alike to rediscover the extraordinary legacy of Luis Russell—the Bocas-born pianist, bandleader and arranger whose recordings in New York during the late 1920s helped lay the foundations of the Swing Era. Although Russell collaborated with jazz legends including Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and Kid Ory, his story remains largely unknown, even in his hometown.
The festival seeks to change that.
Organized by Fundación Bocas para Todos, the Luis Russell Jazz & Heritage Festival is much more than a weekend of concerts. It is a celebration of the cultural bridges connecting Bocas del Toro, Colón, New Orleans and Harlem—places united by migration, Afro-Caribbean heritage and a musical tradition that transformed the cultural landscape of the Americas. The festival celebrates the rich tradition of early and classic jazz, from its New Orleans roots through the Swing Era that Luis Russell helped shape, while also embracing the Afro-Caribbean musical heritage of Panama, including calypso and the rhythms that have long defined life in Bocas del Toro. Through live performances, educational programming and cultural exchange, the festival aims to preserve Luis Russell’s legacy while inspiring new generations to embrace this remarkable chapter of Panamanian history.
The two-day program reflects that mission. Educational events at the Hou Wang Museum will explore the evolution of jazz, the history of Panamanian calypso and Luis Russell’s lasting influence through lectures, screenings, listening sessions and masterclasses. Across Bocas Town, residents and visitors will also enjoy free community performances, a festival parade, balcony concerts, student ensembles and evening headline performances by some of Panama’s leading jazz and Afro-Caribbean musicians.
For Bocas, the festival represents something larger than entertainment.
It is an opportunity to reclaim a chapter of local history that deserves international recognition. Luis Russell’s journey—from the Caribbean coast of Panama to the stages of New Orleans, Chicago and New York—reflects the often-overlooked contribution that Panama’s Afro-Caribbean communities made to the development of jazz. The festival brings that story back where it began.
The Bocas Breeze is proud to be a Founding Partner of the Luis Russell Jazz & Heritage Festival. Supporting initiatives that celebrate the people, history and culture of our archipelago has always been central to our mission, and we believe this festival has the potential to become one of Bocas del Toro’s signature cultural events while attracting international attention to our unique cultural heritage.
In the months leading up to October, The Bocas Breeze will be bringing readers regular coverage of the festival, including stories about Luis Russell, featured artists, educational activities, historical perspectives and everything you need to know as the inaugural edition approaches.
For now, we encourage our community to become part of this historic beginning by joining the Friends of the Festival program. Community support will help fund artistic programming, educational initiatives, cultural exchange and the long-term preservation of Luis Russell’s legacy and Bocas del Toro’s rich Afro-Caribbean heritage. Every Friend of the Festival helps lay the foundation for what organizers envision as an annual celebration with lasting cultural impact.
Sometimes the most important stories are the ones waiting to be rediscovered close to home.
This October, the Luis Russell Jazz & Heritage Festival offers Bocas a chance to celebrate one of its greatest cultural ambassadors—and to remind the world that the history of jazz doesn’t begin in only one city.
Part of it begins here.
