SUCCESS! Today the Bocas del Toro Rotary Club delivered a donation of over 1,000 masks and other personal protection equipment to the Isla Colón hospital. (español abajo)
After learning of an upcoming shortage of PPE at the Guillermo Sánchez Borbón Hospital, members of the Bocas del Toro Rotary sprang into action. They began fundraising, finding vendors of medical supplies, learning about the nuances of modern PPE, consulting with doctors and tracking down the highest quality medical supplies in the country and at the best value. The first donation was presented today to Dr. Carlos Miranda, where 100 N95, 200 KN95 and 1,000 surgical masks, along with 1,000 gloves and a case of disposable gowns were donated for the use of the island’s doctors, nurses, technicians and all front-line medical staff.
The effort was organized by the Bocas del Toro Rotary Club, with many gracious donations from the community including Bocas Barge, Bocas Delfin Building, Dolphin Bay Preserve, The Floating Doctors, T & B (Turismo y Bienestar Travel Agency), Margo Carey, Mary and Carl Heckrotte (aka Camryka), Katherine Dukehart, Jay & Denise DeVine, Emily Talentino, Allan and Tammy Misner, Kurt Betzel, Bryce Andrews and others who have supported the effort.
A special thank you to Dr. Cattán’s clinic in David, who heard about the cause and sold from his own clinic’s stockpile! Thank you to Idesa Group for your tremendous service and Marcel René Du Bois for putting us in touch with each other. A big thank you to Marisa from T & B who not only donated to the cause but provided amazing logistical support, spreading the word and getting the Rotary Club in touch with Dr. Cattan. Thank you to Manuel Sanjur who brought this need to our attention and for all his efforts to improve food security and biosecurity measures during the pandemic. Thank you to Bocas Island Express and Transportes Toby for quick and efficient shipping and last but not least, a big thank you to Dr. Benjamin LaBrot of Floating Doctors for his patience and very valuable crash course on the “ins and outs” of personal protective gear in the year 2020.
Much appreciation, love and respect to everyone who donated, provided support and helped to spread the word about this cause. The Bocas Rotary Club is now planning the next project in support of the hospital. Together we can make the community better equipped to treat, test and prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the islands.
